The Acting Commissioner of Social Security released a statement to announce that local Social Security offices will be opening back up to the public for in person services on April 7, 2022. While it is not necessary to make an appointment, they encourage people to use their online services, calling, or scheduling an appointment to avoid waiting in lines. Walking in without an appointment might lead to a longer wait time or inconvenient delays.

The office can get quite hectic, so it is important to beware of the busiest office hours. If possible, avoid coming in:

  • First thing in the morning
  • Early in the week
  • Early part of the month

With this is mind, people may want to visit at other times or schedule phone appointments which can ultimately save you from going into the busy office. The most convenient ways to contact the agency is through their online services and telephone.

Health Requirements

Certain safety measures are still being required given that most of the customers that they serve have health vulnerabilities. They are continuing to be consistent with their union agreements and for the sake of the public as well. Required safety measures to be aware of include:

  • Masking
  • Physical distancing
  • Self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms

Masks will be provided to all customers and employees at the Social Security office doors if needed.

Contacting the Social Security Agency

Most of the services are online and available to the public through a my Social Security account or by contacting them through a telephone. If you do not have an account, you are able to create your own on the Social Security website. Other ways to get in contact is by dialing their toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1‑800‑325‑0778) for more information on services. They also warn customers to be aware as they transition to a new phone system that a busy signal or unintentional disconnected calls may occur for some.
