The Social Security Benefit Verification Letter, also known as “proof of income letter” or “proof of award letter,” is used to summarize employment history, disabilities, Social Security benefits, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicare coverage. This document can be used for any income verification purpose such as loans, rent, housing assistance, and other forms of government aid.

Online Access

It is now possible to view, save, and print your own Social Security Benefit Verification Letter. You can access your verification letter by logging into your “my Social Security” account online and selecting Replacement Documents.

In addition to this letter, other evidence of income can now be added to your verification letter to avoid the risks of hackers and fraud. Creating an account will also give you access to more online services and potentially beneficial documents.

Create a my Social Security Account

You can alter your annual cost-of-living or income-related information from your my Social Security account. You can also opt in to receive specific notices online instead of by mail – specifically, they will be available in the Message Center section of your account.

If you don’t have a my Social Security account, you can easily create one in 10 minutes or less. Not only is this account free to use, but is also available regardless of whether the user receives benefits or not. There is also a my Social Security Representative Payee portal for individual representatives to access a recipient’s online standardized Benefit Verification Letter.

Alternatively, you can contact a Social Security office near you or call the agency at 800-772-1213 to receive your Verification Letter.
