Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) supports individuals who are disabled and unable to work. The SSDI program is available to anyone with qualifying work history, whether that be through their own employment or a family member’s employment, and benefits can only be awarded after six full calendar months of being disabled.

SSDI payments occur once a month, depending on your birthday. While late SSDI payments are uncommon, it is essential to know what day of the month your payment falls on so you can quickly tell if your check is late. For more information on what to do if your SSDI check is late and how we may be able to help, contact our Social Security disability law firm today.

General Timeline for SSDI Payments

SSDI payments are usually paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of every month, depending on your birthday:

  • Individuals born between the 1st and the 10th receive checks on the second Wednesday of the month;
  • Individuals born between the 11th and the 20th receive checks on the third Wednesday of the month; and
  • Individuals born between the 21st and the 31st receive checks on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Common Reasons for Late SSDI Payments

Several factors can contribute to your SSDI check arriving late. For example, not telling the Social Security Administration (SSA) about a change of address could lead to misplaced payments. Additionally, a change to your bank account information, such as switching to direct deposit, should be reported to the SSA to avoid delays in processing your payment.

Furthermore, the SSA office dealing with your check might have a slower processing time, causing your SSDI check to arrive late. Office delays are often caused by an unexpected increase in disability recipients.

What Should You Do if Your SSDI Payment is Late?

If your check is late and you want to know the whereabouts of your SSDI payment, you should contact your local SSA office. For more information about why your SSDI check has been delayed, call 1-800-772-1213 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
