What Does Family Mean to Me?

Family means both the people who are connected through blood as well as the people we choose. My family history is definitely not a picture out of Leave It to Beaver. My parents divorced when I was 10 years old, and my father raised me through two additional marriages, so I’ve seen the challenges of divorce both in my own nuclear family as well as in the dissolution of my own marriage. I was raised with a brother who was two years older than me. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 20. You’ll hear me refer to my sister, who is actually my first cousin, but we are very close, and after losing my brother, I guess I decided I needed a sibling. Family is the people you choose to spend time with, share your life with, and on whom you know you can count on when life is challenging you.

What Is My Family Structure Like?

I am recently divorced after 15 years of marriage. Even though we are no longer married, I’m still close with my two stepsons who were very young when we got married and I call them my own. I’m also the mom of four fur-babies, three cats and a dog.

Favorite Happily Ever After Divorce Story

My dad was married to his second wife from the time I was 11 until I was 14. We didn’t speak for at least 15 years. However, we reconnected when I was in my 30’s and although it’s primarily been through social media, we still talk today.

Hobbies

Taking walks with my dog, Jack; all things Disney (I was actually married at Walt Disney World and still find it magical today even though mine was not a fairy-tell marriage); reading, traveling, spending time with friends
