Tips for Self-Care During Divorce

One of the most important things you can do during the divorce process to work towards a favorable outcome is practice self-care.  Staying mentally and physically strong gives you the energy and clarity to advocate for yourself on the issues that really matter and to differentiate between the issues that matter and those that can be compromised.  Here are some tips that we see make the most difference for our clients:

  • Work with an individual therapist: Therapists can give tips on stress management and also help you put aside your emotions during the process so you can make sound decisions when negotiating.
  • Get regular exercise: As little as going on a walk each day can make a difference in your energy and stress level.
  • Eat regular healthy meals:  Don’t be the person who stress eats and gains 40 pounds during the divorce, and don’t be the person who wastes away to nothing for failing to eat.  Plan out healthy meals to keep yourself nourished and strong.
  • Get adequate sleep: Our bodies can’t function well, and we can’t think clearly without enough sleep.  Make it a priority to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.
  • Lean on your support network: If you let friendships and relationships slip during your marriage, then re-establish those connections and use your friends for support.  Even just getting out and socializing can take your mind off of the more serious problems in your personal life.
  • Pray or attend church: If you are religious or spiritual, this is a good time to draw strength from those beliefs.
  • Relax or meditate: Deep breathing, practicing meditation or yoga, or just taking time for yourself with a glass of wine in a bubble bath can make a big difference in your mental and physical state.
  • Keep your perspective:  You are going through a temporary difficult time, but you will get through it, move on, and create an even better life for yourself.
