What Is My Family Structure Like?

I spent over sixteen years in an unhappy marriage for the sake of my two young children. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I wasn’t doing my children any favors, because kids learn more from your example than from what you try to verbally teach them. Once I finally made the decision to leave my husband, the environment became more peaceful for our family. Eventually I met and married a man who was the perfect husband, provider and stepfather. My kids’ lives have been changed by witnessing what a loving relationship looks like.

What Does Family Means to Me?

As a child of divorce, I understand the relationships of step siblings and step parents. My husband and our blended family were absolutely blissful together. Maybe not 100% of the time, but most of the time. It was based on love as much as it was respect and loving them all enough to take the time to understand their perspectives, feelings and challenges.

I happily remarried a few years after my divorce to a wonderful man.  I became a stepmother and helped my children build relationships with their new stepfather and step siblings.  My dear husband who served his country for a brilliant 23 years as an Atlanta Police Officer, Secret Service Agent at the White House, and Federal Agent was diagnosed with cancer just before we were married. I never left his side in his courageous battle, but we lost him just a year later. While I lost my husband, I felt so blessed to have the time with him that I did.  He changed my life for the better, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  I am living proof that a Happily Every After Divorce is possible.
