Parkinson’s Disease is a disorder that targets the nervous system and causes problems with movement and other bodily functions. Unfortunately, there are currently no tests that explicitly look for and diagnose this disease. Parkinson’s Disease is instead diagnosed by a mix of specific symptoms, prior medical history, and examinations by doctors. It is important to be proactive in identifying early warning signs of Parkinson’s Disease and understanding how to address them.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Because medical tests cannot alert doctors of Parkinson’s Disease, knowing the symptoms is especially important to catching this disease early. Identifying the signs of Parkinson’s Disease gives you the opportunity to contact your doctor and take swift action.

Examples of the most common symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease include:

  • Tremors
  • Small and/or shaky handwriting
  • Constipation
  • A low voice
  • Fainting
  • Inability to stand straight or still

It can be difficult to determine whether these symptoms are indicative of Parkinson’s or some other conditions. Certain factors such as the repetitiveness and intensity of the symptoms should be noted when consulting a doctor. It is always better to be safe and make your healthcare provider aware and see what they recommend.

Treatment Options and Next Steps

If you are confirmed to have Parkinson’s Disease, there is unfortunately no cure available at this time. However, there are different treatment options and steps you can take to help manage the symptoms. Types of treatment your doctor may recommend for Parkinson’s Disease symptom management include:

  • Medications
  • Surgery
  • Physical therapy
  • Aerobic exercise plans
